A new garden retreat in 6 easy steps

A Shed Can be a back-yard retreat - inside a man-shed

Sheds are class 10A Buildings but a Shed Can be a back-yard retreat to be proud of. The shed can be a place to relax, you just can’t live in it!

Many back yard sheds are not built to Australian Standards. You may find that the cladding, (steel sheeting), is part of the actual structure instead of being fixed to structural supports. If this is the case, it’s best to strengthen the sides first with steel or aluminium braces.

Step 1 - A Shed Can be a back-yard retreat

Insulate your shed

A shed can be very cold in winter and extremely hot in summer, so it is sensible to add insulation. It needs to be comfortable inside as you will be spending time there. Add insulation such as “Earthwool” available from all big hardware stores. Line with Fibre Cement Board or even plasterboard. If Plasterboard is used it is essential that the shed is made waterproof. Almost all sheds have a gap between the top of the wall and the roof. Use weatherstripping and silicon sealer to make the shed as airtight as possible.

Step 2 - A Shed Can be a back-yard retreat

Connect electricity

Garden sheds may have no electricity connected. Some may make do with a single bulb or bench light but you'll need more lighting and electric points for comfort. Electric installation is NOT a job for the home handyman so make sure you use a qualified electrician for this type of work. Overhead lights and lamps are needed to illuminate the room for hobbies, reading or study. An outdoor light is also a great idea if you plan on using the space in the evening.

 Step 3 - A Shed Can be a back-yard retreat

Paint the shed

You definitely need some interior paint and if it is an old shed, you may want to paint the outside too. A couple of days should see a painting job completely finished, even on a medium size shed. If the exterior is being painted, it is usually a good idea to see it match the paintwork of the house.

Step 4 - A Shed Can be a back-yard retreat

Install a Nice floor

Concrete is the usual shed floor. It does not usually make for a comfortable get-away spot. Shed flooring kits are available commercially and can usually be modified to suit your needs. It is not difficult to install your own flooring kit. Install a more durable flooring in your shed (vinyl flooring is ideal but tile or carpet is suitable). Use a favourite floor rug for even greater comfort.

Step 5 - A Shed Can be a back-yard retreat

Add Cooling and Heating

A small reverse-cycle air conditioner is an ideal addition to a shed almost anywhere in Australia. They do not take up much space, but they will allow you to keep your new retreat at the perfect temperature all year round. We have seen old wood-burning stoves installed in some bigger sheds. Be aware that the heat they can generate may be just too much for a smaller, insulated shed.

Step 6 - Final Touches

Your new escape is now ready to furnish to your choice. It could be a She-Shed or Man-Shed, Study, or entertainment area! The choice is yours.

To really finish it off, consider a deck or just a covered patio area at the door. Plant a vine by your shed so that it will eventually climb up the shed to make it look like a proper part of your garden. Leave space for a couple of indoor plants which help keep the air fresh and help to bring the garden ‘inside’ to your new room.
